“Call Your Doctor Immediately”: The Chance Encounter That Saved a Tour Guide’s Life

For Charles Barkhouse, a historian and tour guide on Nova Scotia’s famous Oak Island, a routine Saturday shift in September 2025 quickly turned into a life-saving medical intervention.

At the end of his standard tour, a female member of the group approached him. Barkhouse assumed she was going to ask a question about local history. Instead, she identified herself as a doctor and asked for permission to examine his neck. After briefly feeling the left side of his throat, she delivered a chilling instruction: “Call your doctor immediately.”

    A Shocking Diagnosis

Taking the mysterious tourist’s advice, Barkhouse contacted his physician the following Monday. He was sent for immediate testing and referred to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.

The tests confirmed a terrifying reality: Barkhouse had cancer. Further analysis revealed it was specifically Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC).

“Anytime you hear that word, it’s scary,” Barkhouse noted. “However, thyroid cancer has one of the best treatment and recovery rates of all the various types of cancer.”

On December 31, 2025, Barkhouse underwent extensive surgery to remove the cancer. The surgical team successfully extracted his thyroid gland alongside 40 lymph nodes—23 of which were found to be cancerous. Today, doctors believe they have removed all the cancer from his body, though he will require regular testing for the rest of his life.

    Understanding Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC)

MTC is a rare and aggressive form of thyroid cancer. Because tumors often remain very small in the early stages, the disease frequently goes undiagnosed until it has spread to the lymph nodes, lungs, or liver.

Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC) Quick Facts
Prevalence Accounts for only 4% to 10% of all thyroid cancers.
Overall Survival Rate Thyroid cancer generally has a 98% five-year survival rate when caught early.
Causes 75% of cases have an unknown cause (no family history). About 25% of patients inherit a genetic condition that raises their risk.
Standard Treatment Total surgical removal of the thyroid gland, sometimes followed by chemotherapy or radiation.
Long-Term Care Patients must take lifelong medication to replicate the hormone functions normally carried out by the thyroid.

    Warning Signs and Symptoms

Barkhouse shared his story on social media to raise awareness about the importance of early detection. Because the thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy use, heart rate, and body temperature, a tumor can severely disrupt standard bodily functions.

Medical experts advise patients to be vigilant for the following common symptoms:

    • A physical lump or nodule on the thyroid gland (experienced by 75% to 95% of patients)

    • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

    • Persistent hoarseness or vocal changes

    • Unexplained difficulty breathing or swallowing

The Search for a Guardian Angel

Barkhouse is now looking forward to the rest of his life, but he harbors one major regret: he never got the contact information of the doctor on his tour.

“I truly believe that that doctor was on the tour that day for a reason, whether it was fate, destiny, or serendipity,” Barkhouse shared on Facebook. “Everything lined up. It was like a perfect storm that day. She was in the right place at the right time… That doctor is my Guardian Angel.”
