A Fight for Accountability: Former Landscaper Battles Monsanto After Devastating Cancer Diagnosis

Phil Dressel lives in constant agony. The 69-year-old former Florida landscaper spends his days confined to his apartment, hooked to an IV machine, and tormented by phantom pain from a leg that is no longer there.

“My foot was hurting so bad – literally, on fire,” Dressel recalls of the left leg that surgeons were forced to amputate at the hip to save his life. Even now, the burning sensation persists.

Today, Dressel is fighting what may be his final battle. Diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma, he is taking Monsanto—the manufacturer of the popular weedkiller Roundup—to court, claiming the chemical poisoned him and ravaged his body. Next week, his legal team will ask a Florida judge to fast-track his lawsuit and set a trial date within the year due to his rapidly declining health.

In 2023, Phil Dressel noticed severe itching on his hands. That itching soon became open sores that spread to his back, feet, and, eventually, his face

    The Devastating Physical Toll

For over 20 years, Dressel relied on Roundup for his landscaping business in Fort Lauderdale, trusting the product’s safety claims. “When you say something is safe, it’s safe. So I didn’t think anything of it,” he said.

That trust shattered in 2023 when severe itching on his hands rapidly evolved into open sores spreading across his back, feet, and face. After rounds of ineffective dermatological treatments, doctors finally uncovered the grim reality: Mycosis Fungoides, a rare form of lymphoma that initially mimics eczema or psoriasis.

By the time of his diagnosis, the cancer had invaded his bloodstream. While chemotherapy managed to clear his blood, the disease remained entrenched in his skin, triggering a cascade of brutal complications:

    • Amputation: Lesions on his left leg turned septic, requiring a life-saving hip amputation in May 2024.

    • Skull Damage: A massive tumor on his forehead ate through his skin, muscle, and bone. Surgeons had to remove the infected tissue, revealing that his skull had been dangerously exposed for months.

    • Chronic Sepsis & Hearing Loss: Dressel has survived sepsis at least three times. Ongoing lesions inside his ear have permanently damaged his hearing.

A lesion on Phil's forehead ate through his skin, then his muscle, then his bone, until a surgeon finally removed the tumor and discovered that his skull had been exposed for months

    Rejecting the Standard Payout

As his medical bills mounted, Dressel was offered approximately $48,000 through a broader Roundup settlement process. He firmly rejected it.

According to his attorney, David Selby, the offer was not even close to realistic given the catastrophic nature of his injuries. The modest sum would have been instantly swallowed by his medical providers, leaving Dressel with nothing. Instead of taking the guaranteed money, Dressel wants his day in court. He is seeking public accountability while he is still alive to witness it.

Between the major operations, there have been endless smaller procedures, including wound cleanings, skin grafts and treatments for lesions that still erupt on his chin and inside his ear, where one has damaged his hearing and causes constant pain

    The Billion-Dollar Threat to Bayer

Dressel’s individual fight represents a massive vulnerability for Bayer, the pharmaceutical giant that acquired Monsanto in 2018.

Bayer has spent years attempting to contain the legal fallout from claims that Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate, is linked to blood cancers. The company has consistently disputed these allegations, maintaining that extensive studies and regulatory reviews prove the product is safe when used as directed. They also deny that state laws required stronger cancer warning labels.

However, Dressel’s push for an independent jury trial threatens Bayer’s broader legal strategy:

    • The Current Landscape: Bayer has already resolved over 100,000 claims, paying out roughly $11 billion.

    • The Proposed Settlement: A $7.25 billion deal is currently on the table to allow eligible claimants to accept a standardized payout or opt out to pursue their own lawsuits.

    • The Risk: Large-scale settlements rely on plaintiffs choosing certainty over the gamble of a trial. If a jury awards Dressel millions of dollars for his catastrophic injuries, it could inspire tens of thousands of other active claimants to hold out for higher payouts.

A substantial verdict for Dressel wouldn’t just be a personal victory; it could drive up the cost of future negotiations, prolong the litigation indefinitely, and deal a massive blow to Bayer’s efforts to close the book on America’s largest product-liability battle.
