The tragic events that have been unfolding on cruise ship MV Hondius is an international point of concern.
There are many different varieties of hantavirus, and while most are not transmissible human-to-human, the strain confirmed to be on the MV Hondius is the Andes Strain from South America… and that sadly is.
It can be passed from person to person through bodily fluids, meaning coughing, sneezing and kissing.
Understandably, some people are concerned that as people disembark the ship and fly home they could unwittingly infect people with hantavirus and it could become the ‘next pandemic’.
