A widely prescribed antidepressant could help people struggling with long Covid fatigue, a new study suggests. A randomised clinical trial compared the potential of fluvoxamine – marketed as Faverin – metformin and a placebo to reduce one of the most persistent and debilitating symptoms of long covid, fatigue. The study, conducted by scientists at the Brazilian Biomedical Research Institute included almost 400 adults who had been experiencing fatigue for at least 90 days after falling ill with covid. Participants were randomly assigned one of the drugs for 60 days, and asked to trac how tired they felt using a standard severity scale. The fluvoxamine patients reported steady improvements…

Scientists have uncovered dozens of genetic traits that could pinpoint who is at risk of developing autism. In one of the largest studies of its kind, researchers in New York analyzed genetic data from more than 15,000 people across North, Central and South America, including 4,700 individuals who had autism. They linked 35 genes to the condition, a development that the team said could provide a ‘road map’ for diagnosis. The genes were not new, but unlike in other studies that focused on Europeans, the scientists analyzed data from people of Latin American ancestry — a genetically diverse group made up of indigenous American,…

Despite being positioned as a tool for quitting smoking, vaping is as potentially harmful as cigarettes – and can cause both mouth and lung cancer. Despite health chiefs across the world saying that e-cigarettes are less damaging to the body than traditional smoking products, Australian researchers have made the strongest link yet between the gadgets and the disease. A team based out of the University of New South Wales in Sydney reviewed all the available literature into the potential harms of vaping that were published between 2017 and 2025. The most concerning studies, they noted, are the ones that show that vaping can cause changes to…
Prince Philip quietly lived with pancreatic cancer for nearly eight years before his death, it has been claimed. The revelation, published in a forthcoming biography about his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, is surprising on two counts. Firstly, it was never made public that the Duke had cancer, and secondly, pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to detect and has one of the lowest survival rates of any form of the disease, with many people dying just six months after diagnosis. Prince Philip’s story highlights the key risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing the disease, from age and family history to lifestyle choices…
When asked to picture the ‘healthiest vegetable’, it’s unlikely that watercress springs to mind.Regarded more as a salad leaf, the small, peppery green is actually a member of the brassica family – cousin to broccoli, cabbage, kale and mustard.Delicate as it may look, watercress is unusually nutrient–dense for such a light leafy green. It’s a great source of vitamins A, C and K, along with folate and calcium, and like other vegetables in the brassica family, it contains plant compounds linked to antioxidant and anti–inflammatory effects. It’s these credentials that saw it crowned ‘the world’s healthiest vegetable’ in December, after receiving…

It was a crisp autumn morning when Darren came to my gastroenterology clinic, dressed in a suit and a tie. A university professor with two PhDs, he had been lecturing students that morning on the valence electrons within atoms.Clearly, he was a man at ease with his intellect. Physically, though, he was not. For years, he’d felt sluggish and bloated – and his bowel movements were sporadic at best. When I asked him what his last poo looked like, he was mortified. ‘I don’t look at my poo. What’s it supposed to look like?’ Over the next few months, I saw…
In 2013, a scientist at Abbott Laboratories saw study results with potentially big implications for the company’s profits and the lives of some of the world’s most fragile people: preterm infants. The upshot, she wrote in an email: Babies fed rival Mead Johnson Nutrition’s acidified liquid human milk fortifier — a nutritional supplement used in neonatal intensive care units — developed certain complications at higher rates than those given an Abbott fortifier, a researcher at the University of Nebraska had found. At least one of those complications can be deadly. The Abbott scientist, Bridget Barrett-Reis, described the results in the…
Overweight or obese middle-aged women who consume alcohol are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, a new study has found. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with around 60,000 cases diagnosed each year and approximately one in seven women expected to develop the disease during their lifetime. Most of us carry a mental image of the person most likely to suffer a heart attack: Overweight, perhaps middle-aged, living on fried food and rarely exercising. But according to leading cardiologist Dr Oliver Guttman, that stereotype can be dangerously misleading. One of the biggest risk factors for cardiovascular disease is high cholesterol – and it can affect people who appear slim, fit and otherwise healthy, he warns. While unhealthy habits such as eating a diet high in saturated fats, drinking heavily and avoiding exercise can increase the risk of heart attack, Dr Guttman stresses that body shape alone does not tell the…
