Health \u2013 guava fruit is a rich, affordable source of Vitamin C, which can help the body absorb more iron from plants in our diet such as leafy greens, pulses, nuts and seeds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Vitamin C is believed to increase the amount of iron absorbed by the body, which is why the NHS advises taking the supplements with orange juice or vitamin C tablets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But guava contains around four times as much Vitamin C per 100g as oranges whilst also providing Vitamin A, folate and iron \u2013 all of which are needed by young women particularly those who are trying to conceive and in early pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers analysed data from 12 studies involving 235 women and teenage girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They found that the<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0juice was particularly effective for pregnant women \u2013 42 per cent of whom become anaemic during pregnancy \u2013 who saw a 1.8g\/d increase in\u00a0haemoglobin levels after drinking the juice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Haemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that is responsible for carrying oxygen around the body, and gives blood its red colour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The five studies that directly compared iron supplements with the dual\u2013action approach, involving over 200 women, found guava juice boosted levels by around 1.3g\/dl.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\" style=\"\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-d55f69fbb6b2959d\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/05\/26\/16\/107966265-15848677-Without_iron_the_body_can_t_make_enough_haemoglobin_the_protein_-a-1_1779809559298.jpg\" height=\"478\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Without iron, the body can't make enough haemoglobin, the protein in the blood responsible for carrying oxygen around the body. Iron is also necessary to maintain a healthy immune system<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers suggested this is enough to reverse symptoms of the condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;An increase of 1\u20132g\/dl may shift individuals from mild or moderate anaemia to non\u2013anemic categories, improving fatigue, cognitive function and productivity outcomes,&#8217; they said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The team are now calling for guidelines to be updated to integrate guava juice into school nutrition programmes and antenatal care packages, especially in low\u2013 and middle\u2013income countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Given its nutritional richness and affordability, guava juice offers a promising low\u2013cost intervention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Strengthening local supply chains, standardising formulations\u00a0 and embedding such dietary approaches within public health nutrition programmes could collectively contribute to more sustainable anemia control,&#8217; they said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, the team acknowledged there are some limitations to the research, including the fact that all studies were carried out in Indonesia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Without further rigorous research, to define the best therapeutic dose and period of use, guava juice alone can&#8217;t be recommended as an alternative to conventional treatment in those at risk of iron deficiency anaemia. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The latest figures suggest around two billion people now have iron deficiency, with 1.2 billion suffering from iron\u2013deficiency anaemia worldwide, primarily driven by poor diet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Other contributing factors include heavy periods, frequent pregnancies and poor access to healthcare.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It affects just 3 per cent of men and around a third of women, but tell\u2013tale signs such as thinning hair, low mood and brain fog are often normalised \u2013 making iron deficiency one of the most underrecognised conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The NHS recommends 6.9\u20138.7mg a day for children under 10, men over 18 and women over 50 and 14.8mg for menstruating girls and women aged 11\u201349.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Most people should be able to get all the iron they need from their daily diet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Good sources of iron include liver, red meat, pulses, nuts, dried fruit and fortified cereals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But women who lose a lot of blood during their period are at higher risk of iron deficiency anaemia and may need to take supplements to keep stores topped up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Those who think they have iron deficiency anaemia can request a blood test from their GP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A common nutrient deficiency impacting over a third of women \u2013 causing fatigue, brain fog and low mood \u2013 could be eased with guava juice, scientists claim.\u00a0 Iron deficiency has been listed as one of the top five causes of disability in women of reproductive age globally.
