Holidays were ruined. Long flights felt impossible. Within months, every step was sending pain through her body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Back pain is one of the most common medical complaints worldwide, affecting an estimated eight in ten adults at some point in their lives. In the US alone, around 16 million adults suffer chronic back pain severe enough to limit daily activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;My daily life was really a lot of back pain,&#8217; Woolever said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She tried almost everything to recover, including\u00a0physical therapy twice a week, chiropractors and acupuncture. I was crippled by the time I got there,&#8217; Woolever told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Soon afterward, she began worrying about an upcoming trip to Nepal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I was really, really concerned about sitting on an airplane for 23 hours and being in excruciating pain and then being unable to hike, which was the plan,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Determined to avoid surgery if possible, Woolever sought out Dr Conley, who quickly identified a major problem: Woolever&#8217;s body had essentially become &#8216;trapped in a cycle of pain and compensation.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to Dr Conley, pain can cause people to unconsciously tense muscles and change the way they move in order to protect an injured area. But Conley explained that gentle walking helps lubricate joints, improve blood flow, reduce inflammation and retrain the body to move naturally again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Research increasingly supports this idea. Studies have shown regular walking can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, dementia and depression, while also significantly improving chronic lower back pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, Conley says many patients fail because they believe they must immediately aim for 10,000 steps a day \u2013 a target she says originated from a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in the 1960s rather than hard scientific evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Instead, she starts patients with what she calls &#8216;micro walks.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The routine is deliberately simple: just 500 steps at a comfortable brisk pace \u2013 roughly five minutes of walking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The aim is consistency rather than intensity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Conley also changed Woolever&#8217;s footwear. She advised her to switch to shoes with a wide toe box \u2013 the front part of the shoe surrounding the toes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Many modern shoes compress the toes together, experts say, which can weaken foot muscles, reduce stability and contribute to painful conditions including bunions, plantar fasciitis and neuromas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wide toe-box shoes allow the toes to spread naturally, improving balance and helping the entire body move more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Woolever started with five-minute walks on a treadmill, carefully tracking her progress each day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The results surprised her almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I immediately started to know once I started tracking. I could see I am better than I was two days ago when I didn&#8217;t walk. The days I walked, I was better, which was really counterintuitive to me initially,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Because she already had good baseline fitness from her active lifestyle, Woolever did not need to stay at the 500-step micro walk for long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Over several months, she increased her walks from five minutes to 10, then 15 and eventually 30 minutes a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">By the time ski season returned in January 2025, the transformation was dramatic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Her back pain had faded from what she described as a constant roar to a dull grumble. Her knee pain had largely disappeared.
