But it did not find the same effect for women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researchers say the findings, from an analysis of 1,200 people over 60, could be used to help delay the onset of dementia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The study, published in the journal Neurobiology Of Aging, also found that for those with a strong genetic risk factor for <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/alzheimers-disease\/index.html\" id=\"mol-cca1f010-3b85-11f1-a013-c78ac692251f\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>, a diet high in salt lowered the age at which they were likely to be diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nhs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-cca8a6d0-3b85-11f1-a013-c78ac692251f\">NHS<\/a> recommends adults should have no more than 6g of salt a day \u2013 that&#8217;s the equivalent of just a single teaspoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Our findings provide early evidence of a link between higher sodium intake and cognitive function, but more research is needed to fully understand how and why this relationship exists,&#8217; said study author Dr Samantha Gardener, from Edith Cowan University in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;There is some indication from previous studies that high sodium diets may contribute to processes in the brain associated with cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;However, further investigation will be critical to determine the underlying mechanisms and inform future dietary recommendations aimed at reducing dementia risk.&#8217;<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\" style=\"style\" wp_automatic_readability=\"8\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-57675f6149b1748a\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2026\/04\/19\/01\/107996029-15745655-image-a-1_1776558104217.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Eating too much salt could permanently damage men's memories, research has found\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Eating too much salt could permanently damage men&#8217;s memories, research has found<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Previous studies have estimated that around 40 per cent of all dementia cases could be prevented with lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There are about 982,000 people with dementia in the UK \u2013 which is expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040 \u2013 with Alzheimer&#8217;s affecting around 60 per cent of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Memory problems, thinking and reasoning difficulties and issues with language are common early symptoms of the condition, which then worsen over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday and Alzheimer&#8217;s Society have partnered in a drive to beat dementia, which claims some 76,000 lives each year and is the UK&#8217;s biggest killer.
