deaths that are <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10604711\/Britains-Covid-death-rate-ISNT-one-worst.html\" target=\"_self\">considered potentially avoidable with timely and effective healthcare<\/a> &#8211; with only the United States performing worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The findings are expected to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7130645\/Delays-cancer-treatment-NHS-worst-record.html\" target=\"_self\">intensify scrutiny of NHS survival outcomes, waiting times and overall performance,<\/a> as patients continue to face long delays in diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Health spending has risen by more than \u00a360billion in a decade, reaching \u00a3242billion a year, yet the NHS <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-5816203\/UK-health-spending-SIGNIFICANTLY-France-Germany-major-European-countries.html\" target=\"_self\">continues to lag behind comparable countries on a range of health indicators.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts warned funding has been &#8216;poorly targeted&#8217;, with more spent on staffing and pay while hospitals face shortages of equipment, scanners and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The UK has 19 MRI, CT and PET scanners per million people, compared with around 50 in similar tax-funded systems and up to 68 in others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It also has fewer hospital beds than many comparable nations, contributing to longer waiting times and delays in diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These pressures are reflected in international outcome measures, including survival within 30 days of a heart attack, where the UK performs below average.<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"xp-iframe-mnwy19ox4ws38x5591f\" class=\"iframe-creator \" style=\"border: 0; width: 0; min-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/html_modules\/2026\/04_APR\/260413_Treatable_Mortality\/index.html\" name=\"xp-iframe-mnwy19ox4ws38x5591f\" height=\"600\" scrolling=\"no\" data-xpmodule-iframe-resizable=\"\">Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The findings, reported by the Telegraph, also found Britain is among the worst performers for unmet medical needs, with patients <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-12232691\/NHS-fewer-beds-scanners-doctors-countries-health-services-report-shows.html\" target=\"_self\">reporting difficulties accessing timely care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Long NHS waiting lists for specialist appointments and elective surgery\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-8403021\/10million-patients-stuck-NHS-surgery-waiting-lists-Christmas-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_self\">remain widespread, with many patients waiting months for treatment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Institute for Public Policy Research said years of underinvestment in NHS infrastructure &#8211; including hospitals, scanners and technology &#8211; are driving these pressures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Capital investment in the NHS remains around half the level seen in comparable countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Despite debate over NHS reform, researchers dismissed a shift to European-style insurance systems as a &#8216;pointless distraction&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They said the core issue is how NHS funding is allocated and invested, rather than the funding model itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he would not cut NHS funding but insisted money must be <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14538415\/We-spending-getting-Wes-Streeting-gives-damning-verdict-NHS-17-staff-Covid-4-ops.html\" target=\"_self\">spent more effectively<\/a>, adding that ministers face difficult choices and must ensure spending is &#8216;well spent&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The report also <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-7151987\/Theresa-Mays-20billion-plan-transform-NHS-fail.html\" target=\"_self\">highlighted wider concerns around NHS capacity, infrastructure and long-term planning.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Last week, s<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">eparate NHS England figures showed that some trusts <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5721383\/Why-people-dying-Academics-baffled-20-000-extra-deaths-England-Wales.html\" target=\"_self\">recorded higher-than-expected numbers of deaths compared with statistical expectations<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-7037137\/The-11-NHS-trusts-excess-deaths-England.html\" target=\"_self\">recorded deaths 31.9 per cent above expected levels.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Medway NHS Foundation Trust recorded deaths 30 per cent above expected levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-5987347\/29-NHS-trusts-excess-deaths-NOT-13.html\" target=\"_self\">recorded deaths 28.8 per cent above expected levels.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The NHS stresses that these figures are not a measure of quality of care and should not be interpreted in isolation as evidence of poor performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">All three trusts are also among lower-ranked NHS organisations in national performance tables, with inspectors previously identifying concerns requiring further review.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- ad: https:\/\/mads.dailymail.co.uk\/v8\/us\/health\/none\/article\/other\/inread_player.html --><\/p>\n<div class=\"column-content cleared\">\n<div class=\"shareArticles\">\n<h3 class=\"social-links-title\">Share or comment on this article:<br \/>\nNHS patients face worse survival rates than other rich nations in damning international league table &#8211;
