So that&#8217;s like, a third of our time engaged in work, sometimes more,&#8217; said Naaheed Mukadam, a professor of psychiatry at University College London.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That&#8217;s a large part of what our brain is engaged in and therefore will have a large contributory effect on cognitive reserve development.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof Mukadam and her colleagues recently studied how education influences dementia risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">After analysing data from nearly 400,000 people &#8211; including lifestyle factors such as alcohol use, smoking, exercise and medical history &#8211; they found that higher levels of education are linked to a reduced risk of dementia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"mol-img-group floatRHS mol-hidden-caption\" style=\"\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-3adb8115938f4958\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2026\/04\/07\/10\/104494529-15711967-image-a-19_1775552877993.jpg\" height=\"236\" width=\"306\" alt=\"\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In turn, a better education was found to lead to more complex and better-paid roles, benefitting cognitive health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prof Hyun also found in a study, conducted in 2021, that those who graduated from high school had a 26 per cent increase in dementia-free survival time compared to those who did not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said the results suggest that &#8216;if\u00a0people are doing cognitively enriching activities, then their brain has a more efficient network&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts stress there are still ways to support brain health, even if your job is not particularly mentally demanding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-mol-fe-xpmodule-button-logo-link=\"true\" class=\"xp-button-logo-link-wrapper\" data-reactroot=\"\">\n<div class=\"xp-button-logo-link\">\n<div class=\"xp-button-logo-link__logo\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Logo\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/static\/mol-fe\/static\/misc\/xp-button-logo-link\/alzheimer_society.png\" width=\"187\" style=\"height:28px;width:187px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Everyone experiences dementia differently.
