WASHINGTON, D.C., May 31, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) \u2013 The Trump administration is investigating Hawaii and California for forcing pro-life pregnancy centers to promote abortion, according to a new report.<\/p>\n

The Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 (HHS) Office of Civil Rights has sent letters to both states\u00a0notifying them of the investigations.<\/p>\n

The letters say the government is looking into whether their requirements that crisis pregnancy centers inform women how to obtain government assistance for abortions violate federal civil rights rules, the Wall Street Journal\u00a0reports. HHS\u00a0is also examining California\u2019s mandate that most health insurance plans cover abortions.<\/p>\n

Spokesmen for both states\u2019 attorneys general declined to comment on the investigation, while a spokesperson for HHS civil rights chief Roger Severino declined to elaborate on ongoing investigations.<\/p>\n

However, the Wall Street Journal obtained a letter in which Hawaii said it would wait to reply until after the Supreme Court renders a verdict in June\u00a0on the California law forcing pro-abortion speech.\u00a0Pro-life and pro-abortion activists are watching that case very closely, as the Court\u2019s ruling will have sweeping ramifications for free speech and pro-life healthcare.<\/p>\n

Hawaii\u2019s Democratic Gov. David Ige signed\u00a0SB 501\u00a0into law in July 2017. It requires all pregnancy centers in the state to post signs or offer fliers that say the \u201cstate of Hawaii provides free or low-cost access to comprehensive family-planning services,\u201d as well as provide a web address and phone number for abortion and contraception referrals.<\/p>\n

The pro-life Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) has challenged such laws in multiple states. In September, it\u00a0asked\u00a0HHS\u2019s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) to investigate whether SB 501 and a similar Illinois law violate the Hawaii state constitution, the U.S. Constitution, and federal law.<\/p>\n

HHS\u00a0confirmed\u00a0earlier this month that it would investigate Hawaii but had not reached a decision on Illinois.<\/p>\n

The investigations are part of a more proactive posture President Donald Trump has asserted for protecting religious liberty and freedom of conscience, with Severino \u2013 a\u00a0longtime social conservative and religious freedom advocate\u00a0\u2013 responsible for overseeing a wide variety of coercion complaints.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Trump\u00a0created\u00a0a White House office dedicated to \u201censur[ing] that the faith-based and community organizations that form the bedrock of our society have strong advocates in the White House and throughout the Federal Government.\u201d Part of its mission is to monitor the effectiveness of religious-liberty enforcement and recommend new ways to strengthen protections for Americans\u2019 First Amendment rights.<\/p>\n
